Briscoe’s ‘Night of Artists’ Runs Through May 11

 

The Briscoe Western Art Museum invites art lovers and Western enthusiasts alike to celebrate spring with the Night of Artists Exhibition and Sale, a breathtaking showcase of contemporary Western art now open to the public through May 11. This annual event highlights the work of some of today’s most celebrated Western artists, offering visitors a unique opportunity to immerse themselcves in the beauty and spirit of the American West.

A Night that Lasts All Spring: Night of Artists Exhibition and Sale

From scenic landscapes and stunning sculptures to inspired Native Americans, vaqueros and charreadas, more than 270 works by today’s top Western artists are on display at museum’s annual Night of Artists Exhibition and Sale. One of the premier Western Art exhibitions in the world, Night of Artists features new works of painting, sculpture and mixed media by more than 85 leading contemporary Western artists. The Night of Artists exhibition is included in museum admission can be enjoyed during regular museum hours through May 11. Once the exhibition concludes, the works join private collections, making Night of Artists the only opportunity to view the collection.

In addition to exploring the exhibition, guests can enjoy these special events in April:

Experience the magic of Western art firsthand as renowned watercolorist Mark Kohler presents a live painting demonstration. Known for his striking depictions of cowboys, ranch life, and the American West, Kohler will showcase his painting techniques while sharing insights into his artistic journey. Buy your admission in advance to save your seat!

A Texas native, Kohler has spent decades capturing the rich textures and rugged beauty of Western life, blending realism with emotion in every brushstroke. His work has been featured in prestigious collections and exhibitions across the country, and he is widely regarded for his ability to bring the spirit of the West to life on canvas. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to watch a master artist in action and gain a deeper appreciation for the skill and passion behind Western art. Kohler’s work is held in collections around the world and has been featured in publications and books, including Mark Kohler: Going West, available at the Briscoe’s Hendler Family Museum Store.

Add a splash of Fiesta flair to your home with a hands-on Fiesta wreath making workshop! Get ready for San Antonio’s most vibrant season by crafting a colorful, one-of-a-kind wreath in this engaging class led by Amanda Gentis. A fifth-generation San Antonian who loves all things Fiesta, Amanda is the owner of Soirée Swag, an online party accoutrement company that evolved from her wildly successful and now retired blog, “Handmade Mood.” She is also the owner and ringleader of Alamo City Moms, an online community to support and connect mothers and families to all the greatest things in the San Antonio area. Gentis revels in the “mas Fiesta” attitude of the city and uses her master’s in early childhood education and experience as a beloved teacher to guide even the most craft-challenged individuals to create their own stunning décor.

The session includes all supplies and expert instruction, guiding participants step-by-step in creating their own unique design inspired by the bold and lively spirit of Fiesta, as well as refreshments. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or a first-time creator, this class is a fun way to prepare for San Antonio’s biggest party. At the Briscoe, Western art is far more than boots, cattle and cowboys. It’s scenic landscapes, stunning sculpture, detailed portraiture and artifacts that bring the West to life. Spring into the West with these monthly events:

SUNDAY, APRIL 6:

  • Locals Day: FREE Admission and Hands-on Fun, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Briscoe’s “Locals Day” waives museum admission for San Antonio and Bexar County residents on the first Sunday of each month — and includes “Scout the Briscoe,” a free scavenger hunt to help families explore and enjoy the museum’s collection. Everyone who completes Scout the Briscoe receives a 10% discount in the Hendler Family Museum Store. Online registration for Locals Day is recommended.

Locals Day features the Briscoe’s free monthly education series “Full STEAM Ahead” where learners of all ages work together and learn about the American West by engaging in hands-on, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics) experiences. Each activity ties back to the Briscoe’s art and artifacts, bringing the West to life in a new way.

A River Walk Oasis:  The Briscoe’s Collection

Nestled off the River Walk across from La Villita, the Briscoe campus includes the McNutt Sculpture Garden and features 35 sculptures portraying various aspects of Western life in the garden and around the museum’s beautifully restored historic building that once housed the San Antonio Public Library. The museum is open Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday through Monday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Admission is free for children 12 and under and for active duty members of the military. The museum is proud to participate in Museums For All, Blue Star Museums and Bank of America Museums on Us. The Briscoe is located on the south end of the River Walk, near the Arneson River Theatre and La Villita, with convenient parking at the Riverbend Garage directly adjacent to the museum or one of many downtown surface lots.
