Día De Los Muertos at the Guadalupe Nov. 2

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center will celebrate Día de los Muertos with an engaging theatre/dance performance by the Guadalupe Mariachi Academy, Dance Company and Dance Academy on Saturday, November 2, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Plaza Guadalupe, 1327 Guadalupe St. Audience members are encouraged to bring chairs for this free outdoor event. The celebration will also include an array of original altars open to the public from 6 to 9pm that same evening at the Progreso Community Gallery, 1300 Guadalupe St.

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center has celebrated Día de los Muertos for more than 25 years. This year, the Guadalupe Dance Company and Academy will perform La Vida de los Muertos, a free performance at the Plaza Guadalupe.  This original multidisciplinary production involves traditional and contemporary music and dance where the mythological land of the dead is brought to life with fantastical characters, colorful imagery, and elaborate costuming.  The storyline interweaves traditional themes of family, friends, and love with myths and legends told through the generations.  These stories celebrate the experience of being alive and honoring those loved ones who have passed on.

The unique altars are created by San Antonio community members and area schools and will be available for free public viewing at the Progreso Community Building, 1300 Guadalupe St. San Antonio, TX (on the corner of Guadalupe St. and S. Brazos St.; across from the Guadalupe Theater) beginning on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and will continue Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. through November 30, 2024.

Each participant celebrates their altar by honoring their loved ones, cultural icons and community leaders that have passed on. The creation of such altars has become a unique cultural expression in Latin America.

To book a school tour of the altar exhibit please contact GCAC Educational Director, Belinda Menchaca, at mailto:belindam@guadalupeculturalarts.org.
