Tejano Conjunto Festival 2019 Begins Next Week
The 38th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival, presented by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, begins May 15 and runs for five days. Events will take place at the Guadalupe Theater as well as Rosedale Park.
On Wednesday, May 15 at 10:00 a.m., there will be a free seniors’ dance at the Guadalupe, 1301 Guadalupe Street, featuring Eddie Lalo Torres with guest appearances by Beatriz Llamas and Blanca Perla of Las Tesoros de San Antonio. At 7:00 p.m., there will be a special screening of Chulas Fronteras, a 1976 documentary about Texas Mexican Conjunto music, produced by Chris Strachwitz (Arhoolie Records) and directed by Les Blank.
On Thursday, May 16, the annual Conjunto Music Hall of Fame will take place at the theater. It begins with a dinner served at 6:30 p.m. and concludes with a Baile by Los Layton of Edcouch and Elsa and Edgar Vasquez of Laredo, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The 2019 inductees are Norfy Layton, Lorenzo Martinez,
Pepe Maldonado and Mr. Vasquez.
The festival moves outdoors on Friday at Rosedale Park, 303 Dartmouth Street, where attendees can enjoy live performances and sample different kinds of food and drink from onsite vendors. Artists scheduled to perform include Rio Jordan, Los Cucuys de Rodney Rodriguez, Ricky Naranjo y Los Gamblers, JR Gomez y Los Conjunto Bandits, Lazaro Perez, Linda Escobar, Eva Ybarra, Los Texmaniacs with Flaco Jimenez and more to be announced.
Tickets for the Tejano Conjunto Festival can be bought online. A three-day pass is $45, a single Hall of Fame ticket is $35 or two for $60, and daily Rosedale Park tickets are $16.
